Body Condition Scoring (BCS) for Dairy Cows

How to use BCS as a practical nutrition and transition tool — with targets by stage and recording habits that stick.

Body condition scoring estimates fat cover over key bony points using a numbered scale — commonly 1 to 5 in many dairy systems (some regions use 1–9; pick one scale and stay consistent). BCS is a management sensor for energy balance across lactation. It is not a beauty contest and not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis.

On farms without weighbridges, BCS is often the most practical long-term nutrition KPI. It explains calving problems, weak peaks, and poor conception better than arguing about one week’s milk dip.

Where to look and how to stay consistent

Scorers assess areas such as the short ribs, loin, hooks, pins, and tailhead depression. The absolute number matters less than repeatability. Train two people together until they score within about 0.25–0.5 of each other on the same cows.

Score at standardized times: calving, around peak, at pregnancy check or mid lactation, and at dry-off. Random scoring only when a cow “looks bad” biases your dataset.

Linking BCS to feed and milk

Cows that lose too much condition after calving often received too little energy relative to milk output. Cows that gain excessively in late lactation often stayed on high concentrate too long. Stage-based feeding and BCS together close the loop.
