Milk Yield by Lactation Stage: A Practical Guide

How yield typically rises, peaks, and declines across lactation — and how to read your herd’s curve without misusing breed averages.

A lactation curve is the pattern of daily milk yield from calving to dry-off. Most cows rise after calving, reach a peak, then decline gradually. Knowing where a cow sits on that curve prevents two expensive mistakes: panicking about a normal late-lactation decline, and ignoring a flat early lactation that should still be climbing.

Published curves from high-input Holstein herds will not match every Sahiwal-cross or buffalo-adjacent feeding system in Pakistan. Use lactation-stage thinking as a framework, then build expectations from your own session records.

Stages that matter on a working dairy

Early lactation covers roughly the first 3–4 weeks while yield rises and metabolic risk is high. Peak lactation often falls somewhere around weeks 4–10, earlier or later depending on breed, parity, and nutrition. Mid lactation is the long plateau-to-decline phase where feed efficiency and pregnancy status dominate. Late lactation continues the decline toward dry-off, ideally with confirmed pregnancy and controlled body condition.

Days in milk (DIM) is the simple clock. Compare cows at similar DIM and parity when ranking. A 40-DIM second-lactation cow and a 220-DIM first-lactation cow are not in the same contest.

Parity changes the curve

First-lactation animals often peak lower and persist better than mature cows. Mature cows may peak higher but can lose condition faster if underfed. When your herd average shifts because many heifers entered the parlor, “yield is down” may be demographics, not a failed ration.

Keep parity in reports. Farms that cull heavily and replace with heifers without adjusting expectations mis-blame feed dealers and milkers.

Reading session data across the curve

Session-level milk recording shows whether the rise to peak is happening. A fresh cow flat across two weeks of mornings needs a fresh-pen investigation, not a motivational speech. Conversely, a late-lactation cow declining 0.5–1% per week may be normal; a 25% two-day crash is not.
