Across dairy farms worldwide, a handful of diseases are responsible for most yearly losses on any herd — and the good news is that most of them are preventable once you know what to watch for.

1. Mastitis: The Most Common and Costly Disease

Ask any dairy farmer, anywhere in the world, and mastitis is usually the first disease they mention. It is widely recognized as the most prevalent and economically damaging disease in dairy herds globally, and it comes in two forms: clinical cases you can see, and "subclinical" cases that hide inside a quietly falling milk yield.

What it is: An infection of the udder, usually caused by bacteria entering through the teat.

Signs to watch for: A swollen, warm, or painful udder; watery milk or milk with clots; and, in subclinical cases, a drop in milk output with no obvious visible symptom at all.

2. Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD): A Fast-Spreading Regional Threat

Lumpy skin disease was once mostly confined to Africa, but it has spread rapidly across Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Europe over the past several years, causing major economic losses wherever it arrives.

What it is: A viral disease spread mainly by biting insects like mosquitoes and ticks, caused by the lumpy skin disease virus.

Signs to watch for: Firm, round skin nodules on the head, neck, udder, and legs; high fever; swollen lymph nodes; reduced appetite; and a sharp drop in milk yield. Veterinary sources note that lactating cows and Bos taurus-type breeds (like Holstein Friesian) tend to show more severe clinical signs than zebu-type cattle.

What causes it: The virus spreads mainly through insect bites, and also through contaminated feed, water, and direct contact with infected animals.

Prevention: Vaccination where available, insect and tick control around the shed, and quarantining any new or sick animals before mixing them with the herd. 3. Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD)

FMD spreads fast and remains one of the most economically damaging diseases for any cloven-hoofed animal, including cattle and buffalo, in countries where it is still present.

Signs to watch for: Blisters on the mouth, tongue, and feet; drooling; fever; and lameness.

What causes it: A highly contagious virus that spreads through direct contact, contaminated equipment, and even air over short distances.

Prevention: Vaccination on a regular schedule where the disease is present, strict biosecurity (disinfecting equipment, boots, and vehicles), and quarantining new animals before they join the herd. Since FMD is viral, there is no direct cure — treatment is supportive only, which is exactly why prevention matters more than treatment here.

4. Milk Fever (Hypocalcemia)

Unlike the diseases above, milk fever is not caused by an infection — it's a metabolic problem that hits hardest right around calving, and it affects high-producing herds everywhere, not any one region.

What it is: A sudden drop in blood calcium levels, usually within 24–48 hours of calving, when the cow's body cannot keep up with the calcium demand of starting a new lactation.

Signs to watch for: Weakness, cold ears, muscle tremors, and in severe cases the cow being unable to stand.

What causes it: High-producing dairy breeds like Holstein Friesian are more prone to milk fever, especially older cows in later lactations.

5. Ketosis

Ketosis usually shows up in the weeks just after calving, when a cow's energy demand for milk production outpaces what she can eat — a common problem on high-output dairy farms worldwide.

Signs to watch for: Reduced appetite, weight loss, a drop in milk yield, and in some cases a sweet or acetone-like smell on the breath.

What causes it: A negative energy balance — the cow's body is producing more milk than her feed intake can support, so it starts breaking down body fat for energy, which produces ketones.

Prevention: A well-balanced transition diet in the weeks before and after calving, and avoiding cows becoming overconditioned during the dry period.

6. Brucellosis: A Disease That Can Spread to People

Brucellosis deserves special attention because it is zoonotic, meaning it can pass from animals to humans, usually through unpasteurized milk or contact with an infected animal during calving or abortion. It remains a concern in many dairy regions, even where control programs have reduced its prevalence significantly.

Signs to watch for: Abortion in late pregnancy, retained placenta, and reduced fertility. Many infected animals show no obvious signs at all.

Prevention: Vaccination where available, testing new animals before adding them to the herd, and always pasteurizing or boiling milk before drinking it, especially from animals with unknown health status.

7. Foot Rot and Lameness

Foot problems don't always get the same attention as visible disease, but they quietly cost farmers a lot in reduced milk yield and body condition, regardless of climate or region.

Signs to watch for: Limping, swelling between the claws, and reluctance to walk or stand for milking.

What causes it: Bacteria entering through wet, damaged skin on the foot — common in muddy or poorly drained sheds and paddocks.
