The ration a cow needs changes significantly as her milk yield increases, which is why a one-size-fits-all feed formula rarely works well in practice.
This guide breaks down a complete daily feed formula for milking cows across five production tiers, from 15 liters per day up to 35+ liters per day. All quantities below are per cow, per day.
Before jumping into the tables, it helps to know what each ingredient does:
Concentrate feed (wanda): The energy- and protein-dense compound feed mix that forms the backbone of the ration.
Silage: Fermented forage, ideally the primary bulk feed for milking cows. It should not be substituted unless absolutely necessary.
Berseem (green fodder): A fresh green fodder crop. It can stand in for silage when silage isn't available, but it's a compromise rather than an equivalent.
Wheat straw: Dry roughage that adds fiber and helps with rumen function.
Toxin binder: Neutralizes mycotoxins from feed; available in clay-based or yeast-based forms (yeast-based is used at a much lower dose).

Silage is the standard — berseem is a backup, not a replacement. If silage genuinely isn't available, you can substitute up to 40 kg of green fodder (berseem) per day. But treat this as a compromise measure, not a long-term strategy. Silage should remain your primary bulk feed whenever you can secure it.
If you switch to berseem, cut the sodium bicarbonate in half. Berseem has a different buffering effect on the rumen compared to silage, so when it replaces silage in the ration, reduce the sodium bicarbonate dose to 50% of the amount listed above.
Don't assume the animal will eat everything on hot days — and don't panic if it doesn't. These quantities represent the target ration, but actual intake will vary with weather. In hot summer conditions, cows often reduce their consumption of concentrate feed and silage simply because heat suppresses appetite. This is a normal seasonal pattern, not a sign that something is wrong with the ration.
Only add MgO if there's a clinical reason to. Magnesium oxide isn't a routine daily additive — it should only be introduced when an animal is showing digestive issues such as acidosis, loose dung, or milk fat depression. Don't feed it as a standing supplement without a specific problem to address.
Bypass fat concentration can shift in summer. During hot weather, when feed intake drops, some farms replace 84% bypass fat with the more concentrated 99% version to help maintain energy intake despite lower overall consumption. If you're not feeding silage, use this rule of thumb: for cows producing 15–20 liters per day, use 100 g of each (both 84% and 99%); for all other production tiers, add 50 g on top of the existing bypass fat quantity already listed for that tier.
Glycoline has several interchangeable alternatives — Glucosa, Sugapro, and Ketol can all serve the same purpose. Whichever one you use, it should only be introduced after the cow is at least one month post-calving, and it should not become a permanent part of the daily ration. Its role is to support the transition period, not to be a standing feed ingredient.
Add salt to the mixed ration even if salt blocks are available on the feeding bed. Free-choice salt blocks don't guarantee consistent intake — some cows use them, others barely touch them. Including a measured salt dose directly in the ration ensures every animal actually gets what she needs.
A feed formula that's properly matched to a cow's production level does more than support milk yield — it protects rumen health, supports body condition through the lactation curve, and reduces the risk of metabolic issues like acidosis and fat depression syndrome. As yield climbs from 15 liters to 35+ liters per day, the ration doesn't just scale up proportionally — the composition shifts, with amino acids, yeast, and glycogenic supplements only entering the picture at higher production tiers where the metabolic demand justifies them.
Tracking rations manually across a herd with animals at different production levels is where most farms lose consistency.
